  • “The Pull of the Lighthouse”

This is a piece about home.  Rather, it became that for me.  I completed this painting a few years ago, for a dear friend who’d commissioned it for his son’s bedroom.  I always intended to release it as a print, so I had it scanned in high definition and delayed showing it to folks until that time came.  After our family moved back to Oklahoma, with the new garage studio yet to be completed, I revisited this painting and found myself working on it again, touching it up and adding some new elements digitally.  We’ll call it a sort of director’s cut.   It was the perfect outlet to paint while being without the desired setup.  If you’ve been with me for some time or you’ve heard me talk about “meaning” when it comes to my work, you are likely familiar with my approach to the subject.  I like to leave my work open to as much interpretation as possible and allow the viewer to take the meaning from the piece that suits them at the time.   It’s funny, I guess I’ll consider myself successful in that pursuit, as when I started to rework this piece, the meaning took on a life of its own that I can't imagine to be present in its first iteration.  It became about home.

The pull of home.  That intangible tether to us that only our home will always possess.  Whether we like it or not.  Whether we’re aware of it or not.  Whoever, whatever, whenever, wherever “home” is, this became about that, for me. The pull of my upbringing: the people, places, and experiences that grew my ass up.

When we strike out on our great adventures, that we find life to necessitate, we always orient ourselves to home.  It resides in our precise locational navigation, in the navigation of our relationships, our hearts, and our souls.  Sure, home is where the heart is and all that.  But maybe, more accurately, for me at least, home is what the heart is made of.

Home - the lighthouse that remains lit: our tether.   This piece became about striking that delicate balance between the allure of the quest and the things we know and hold most dear.  The looming deeps hold the richest treasures, but we must plan our forays tactfully.   Even the most desirous of seahawks know that this equilibrium is paramount, never forgetting how to get back home.
